I need to migrate data from the DD VTL to physical tape.  I am new to DD VTL and am unsure how to do this with Netbackup 7.1.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!! I  have added tapes to the VTL but the file space allowcation is still around 90%.  Cleaning is helping alittle.

You need to configure an SLP to run your backups to the VTL with a short retention and a duplicate stream with the long term retention is pretty basic, I recommend you to read the SLP.

You simply need to duplicate the images on the VTL tapes.

You use the bpdupicate command :

bpduplicate -dstunit <destination storage unit> -dp <desination pool> -id <media id to copy>

bpstulist will show a list of storage units.

These commands are in the netbackup/bin/admincmd dir

So if I want to duplicate a media TAPE01

eg

bpduplicate -dstunit womble_robot_1 -dp NetBackup -id TAPE01

This would copy the images on TAPE01 using storage unit 'womble_robot_1' onto a tape in volume pool NetBackup.

It should in theory, be that easy.

Once copied, you can expire the original media.

bpexpdate -d 0 -m <vtl media id>

Hi

If your not comfortable with the command line you can also do it on the GUI in the catalog section. Just set it from 'Verify' to 'Duplicate', search for your images, right click > 'Duplicate Image..' and point it to where it should go.

You can use the same method to Expire it by right clicking on the image you want, and selecting expire(just remember to select the right COPY in the top right corner).

You can automate duplications with NBU Vault Options (separately licensed) or with Storage Lifecycle Policies (SLP).

You could, but as our new member, marianb, is wanting to copy 'VTL tapes' you would first have to work out which images are on which tape.

As he has explained he is new to NBU, the command line is by far the easiest way to do this.

As we say in England, "There is method in my madness" ...

Below is what I have been able to figure out :

we have duplication going... and I need to change the global policy for retention because I only need to change the rention on the vtl, unfortunaley i can only lower it down to 5 which won't free up enough space.  however I think with this I am able to get them to life cycle the vtl and upgrage it with more storage!!!
